Child-safe bathroom

May 2021, author: Michał Swoboda, customer advisor
Child-safe bathroomThere is plenty that parents can do to keep their children safe. When designing your home, don’t forget about the dangers that may be awaiting your children around the house. One room where accidents can happen very easily is the bathroom. How should you arrange it?

We all know that the birth of a child changes a family's life by 180 degrees. Young parents have to look at many things differently, including how their home is arranged. When planning your bathroom, remember that it should not only be attractive, but also functional. Ideally, it should also be comfortable for children to use.

Child-safe bathroom

Safety is of course a priority when planning the interior and furnishing of the bathroom. The first area that needs special care is the bathtub and shower area. The child could fall out of the bathtub or slip if he is already able to get out of it on his own. There is also a risk of falling on a slippery floor when showering.

The second area worth looking at is the toilet. If possible, the toilet bowl should be kept low so that the child does not fall off. In addition, it is best to get a slow-closing seat so that it doesn’t hit the child. A special toilet seat cover is a good option for small children. There is also the issue of the washbasin and here, as previously, you should also arrange it so that it’s easy for your child to use it. You now know what a safe bathroom should look like, now it’s time to think about how to make it happen.

Child-safe bathroom – sample solutions

If your bathroom will have a bathtub, consider getting one with handles on the sides that can be grabbed onto from the inside. They can prevent many falls. Bath screens are also an interesting proposition. They can be mounted on almost any bathtub. A child bathing behind the screen will not fall out of the bathtub. In addition, they will not splash the entire floor, and we know how easy it is to slip and fall on a wet floor.

If you’re planning on getting a shower, however, avoid getting one with a high shower tray. Small feet entering and exiting it can easily lose their balance. The child will fall over and may hurt himself. A shower enclosure without a shower tray, i.e. with a linear drain, is a much better solution. However, this involves additional costs and lots of work. Instead, consider getting a completely flat shower tray, like the one offered by SanSwiss. With this model, there is not much difference between the height of the tray and the floor, so even a younger child can manoeuvre it. The flat tray can also be mounted flush with the floor. Whether you have a bathtub or shower, remember to put a non-slip mat on the floor.

Put a low step stool next to the toilet and washbasin. There are many types of steps available in stores. However, not all are equally good. The best models are those with a non-slip surface on the bottom and on the step where the child will be standing.

Child-friendly furniture and accessories

A children's bathroom should not include glass accessories that could be within the reach of a child. Toothpastes and brushes should be kept on handles or in plastic cups. Avoid using pebbles or other small decorations that the child could choke on. We also store laundry detergents and cleaning products in the bathroom. They absolutely must be kept out of the reach of children. Therefore, it is best to invest in high cabinets so that the child cannot reach any chemical agent. In addition, children have their own bath products, as well as bath toys. This, combined with parents’ items and cleaning products, can create a mess. To avoid it, consider using various types of containers and organisers.

Or perhaps a bathroom only for the children?

In houses where there are two bathrooms, consider making one of them only for the children, especially if there is more than one child in the house. This allows parents to have their own zone where they can relax without the risk of tripping over rubber toys, while the children will have a bathroom that is best adapted to their needs.

In such a bathroom, fixtures should be installed low enough for the children. You can get special ones for children, small and colourful, but it will be a considerable expense and children will quickly grow out of it. Therefore, it is enough to just install bathroom fixtures lower, and then decorate the space with child-friendly accessories. The bathroom will change as the children grow. It will have cheerful, colourful cups, a place to store bath toys, non-slip mats, a low-hanging mirror and towel rails. Such a decor will have a lot of charm, and in addition, the bathroom will be convenient for children to use.
