Towel holders as an element of bathroom design

September 2022, author: Michał Swoboda, customer advisor
Towel holderSome furnishings don’t get much of our attention – we have them because we need them. We don’t give them much importance when choosing. It’s a mistake, because these inconspicuous objects can actually make the arrangement look more interesting. In case of the bathroom, towel holders are a good example.

It goes without saying that towel holders are installed around the sink, bathtub and shower unit as it’s important to have them at hand anytime we need them. Furnishings manufacturers outdo one another with newer and newer models. Bathroom towel holders come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes, so we can choose those that will not only be functional, but will also be an interesting decoration. So how to choose a model that combines functionality and aesthetics?

Towel holders that match the bathroom arrangement

Depending on the decor, we should opt for different accessories, and this also applies to towel holders. They should go well with the overall style and design. Here are some examples. If the bathroom is in retro style, then black holders will look great. They can be simple or finished with ceramic elements with flower graphics or folk motives.

For contemporary and industrial bathrooms, simple and plain models are a good choice. Modern chrome holders, for example, both standing and hanging, will work well. Those with slightly square shapes will look really interesting as well.

When it comes to modern glam style, the choice will also be different. This design style is distinguished by splendor and elegance, and one of its main features is the presence of gold and shine. That’s why gold towel holders will be an amazing choice. They will match the interior perfectly.

Wall-mounted and standing towel holders

Towel holders can be divided into standing and wall-mounted ones. Standing racks are definitely the easiest ones to incorporate into our bathroom decor. All we need to do is put it anywhere on the floor, and we’re done. The thing looks different when it comes to wall-mounted holders. Then, we also need to prepare the surface, meaning, make a hole in the tiles or the wall.

Self-adhesive holders can be an alternative, but even the high-quality ones start to fall off after some time. Some people choose to place hooks on the door, but these don’t look that aesthetically pleasing and aren’t particularly functional either, since the bathtub or shower unit are usually far from the door and the towel should be close at hand.

Hanging or standing towel holders?

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Standing towel racks can be placed anywhere and any time. There’s no need to plan their location already at the renovation stage, and if the household members decide to slightly change the arrangement or renovate the bathroom entirely, all they need to do is move the rack. Besides, such holders provide more space for the towels to dry after bathing, which is a big plus, knowing that bathrooms have an excess moisture issue. How about disadvantages? Well, we need to move such holders around when cleaning the floor, and they can also take up too much space in smaller bathrooms.

Hanging towel holders have their advantages, too. First of all, they don’t take up any floor space, so they’re perfect for smaller bathrooms. They also don’t need to be moved around when we’re cleaning. But on the other hand, they aren’t mobile, so we need to think carefully where we want the holder to be placed and we have to drill holes, which takes more time than putting a rack on the floor. Self-adhesive holders are an exception here, but they’re much less durable. However, if that’s a temporary solution, then they will work well.

The material that holders are made of is important

When browsing through towel holders, it’s not just their design and the way they are mounted that we should consider. The material they are made from also matters. The cheapest, and at the same time the least durable ones, are plastic holders. When you hang heavy wet towels on them, they will quickly start to fall off the wall. A much better option are towel holders made from steel or wood. They are more expensive than the plastic ones, but at the same time they are durable, can handle the weight of the towels well and are aesthetically pleasing. Nonetheless, when it comes to wooden holders, we should check if they are protected against moisture so that the wood doesn’t deteriorate when exposed to water.
