Plants in the bathroomAlthough the bathroom is to be, above all, functional, it is worth planning it in such a way as to make it pleasing to the eye and cozy. An interesting effect can be achieved with plants as an addition to the arrangement.

Pot plants make interior spaces cozier. We place them on window sills, dressers and floors. We put them in dining room, living room and bedroom, so why not in the bathroom?

Bathroom plants

It would seem that the bathroom microclimate is unfavorable for plant growth. Nothing could be further from the truth! There are many species which love humidity and will grow much more luxuriant in the bathroom than in a room with dry air, especially during the heating season. Firstly, it is worth paying attention to tropical plants - these are the perfect flowers for the bathroom. Moisture, heat and steam rising during a bath are ideal conditions for this type of species.

Typical tropical plants as well as those that grow in the lower parts of humid forests will thrive in a bathroom microclimate, and the latter will grow well even with little light.

Bathroom plants - basic cultivation principles

Placing plants in your bathroom can create a better ambience and make your daily beauty routine more enjoyable. However, for them to look good, we need to make sure they have the optimum conditions to grow. They shouldn’t be placed in close proximity to chemicals since their fumes could be harmful to plants. This also applies to soap, thus a flowerpot should not be placed next to a soap dish. Flowers fond of humidity often feel uncomfortable when exposed to the sun, so it is better to avoid placing them on a window sill.

We also need to remember to air the bathroom containing plants, and reduce the frequency of watering. The humidity level is always higher in the bathroom than in other rooms, so water evaporates from pots more slowly. Although bathroom flowers love moist it does not mean we should let them overflow with water.

Plant species for the bathroom

Despite the appearances, there is an abundant array of plants that can be included in bathroom decor. Various types of ferns will look spectacular. They love humidity and diffused light. If you wish to introduce some color into your bathroom, you can bet on orchids with colorful flowers. In high-ceiling bathrooms with plenty of space hanging plants will also look interesting. Spider plant, with its long, green foliage and white center, would be just perfect.

One of the most popular plants in recent years is monstera, with its leaves acting as decoration. The plant itself is large and is ideal for spacious rooms. Croton, on the other hand, is a species with colorful and eye-catching leaves. We usually place them in rooms, but due to its moisture level requirements, its cultivation can be difficult. It will be perfect as a bathroom plant since its natural habitat is a humid tropical forest. Other suggestions to consider are anthurium, dumb cane and alocasia, and if your bathroom has an African flair, you might want to use water-loving papyrus, which will remind you of Egypt.

If the bathroom is very bright and has a window allowing plenty of sunlight, we can place here most species that are normally put in rooms. Examples are ficus, dracaenas, bromeliads and marantas.

Will bathroom flowers help fight the dampness?

Sometimes the bathroom humidity is very high and needs to be reduced. Trying to fight the dampness we resort to various methods, but it is also worth thinking about certain species of plants. They will not eliminate the dampness problem completely, but they will reduce it significantly. One of the humidity-absorbing plants is peace lily. It blooms lavishly most of the year and absorbs water not only through its roots but with the entire leaf surface, and thus reduces the moisture level. The parlor palm and the little-known Tillandsia will do just fine as well.

Plants for bathrooms without windows

Pot plants can be placed in a bathroom of any size. They will be perfect for both big rooms and small bathrooms in a block of flats. They will also work well in any design style – modern glam look, rustic, contemporary, but the problem may lay in the lack of daylight. Are there flowers for a bathroom without a window? The answer isn’t quite unambiguous. There are species that don’t mind very shaded places. We just need to remember that every now and then we should move them to another room for a day, in this way, most of the time they should be happy in the bathroom.

One of the plants suitable for bathrooms without windows is ZZ plant. It doesn’t need much sunlight to live. A good suggestion is to place one pot in the bathroom and one in a room with a window, and then simply swap them around once a week. If there is no window in the bathroom, then you can opt for the mentioned parlor palm. Most often, it is bathrooms without windows that have problems with excessive dampness, so this species is all the more worth attention.
