Large bathroom - how to arrange it?

December 2021, author: Daniel Czajka, customer advisor
Large bathroomThe bathroom must be functional, above all. We must find space for the right equipment, and its arrangement is important. While with a small bathroom we sometimes have to put a lot of effort to make sure that the design combines functional and aesthetic values, when it comes to spacious interiors there are no limits. A large bathroom can be arranged in such a way that it not only serves during the morning or evening toilet, but it is also a relaxation area.

When designing a bathroom, it is important to remember that it is a multifunctional place. First and foremost, it should provide comfort during hygiene activities. Thus, we should give careful consideration to the size of the equipment and its adaptation to the needs of the household members, as well as the adequate lighting, which is needed for shaving and putting on makeup. If we have a large bathroom, the arrangements can be diverse and offer plenty of possibilities. We can make a zone dedicated for relaxation or even create a wet room. In this way, the bathroom will not only become a place where people enjoy relaxation, but it will also delight with its design.

Designing a large bathroom

A larger space encourages us to experiment with its decor and seems easier to finish than a smaller room. It’s true in a way, but we should be cautious. The style of a large bathroom should be consistent with the decor of the other rooms in our house. If the entire apartment or house has modern design, choosing rustic style for the bathroom will not be suitable.

When arranging a larger room, we can fall into a trap. Although there is plenty of space, we should be careful to not place too much equipment and decorations there. Even with a spacious bathroom, we may end up feeling that the decor is overloaded and overwhelming. It is worth maintaining the spaciousness that a larger bathroom offers.

A large modern bathroom is distinguished by a gentle division of its space into usable areas. Putting walls is avoided, instead we can opt for changing the tile pattern or placing a sheet of glass.
Large bathroom - how to arrange it?

How to arrange a large bathroom? Start with a project!

The first thing we should think of is the project. Without it, we won’t be able to fully use the potential of the interior. An action plan is fundamental. So, what should such a project include? Firstly, we need to take the bathroom measurements and draw it on a piece of paper or in a computer program, and then we can add subsequent elements. Drawing begins with designating usable areas. There must be a toilet zone, with a toilet bowl and a washbasin. The second area is the bathing area. At this stage, we can specify whether we wish to have a large bathroom with a bathtub and a shower, or whether only a shower unit or a bathtub would fit. If we still have plenty of space left, we can consider creating a relaxation area.
Once we have the basic sanitary ware on the plan, we can see how much space is left for the furniture. At once, we can draw it in the spots where we want to place it. With spacious bathrooms, we can break the usual pattern and we do not have to limit ourselves to ordinary bathroom shelves. A good suggestion is to have custom fitted furniture that takes up the entire wall. This kind of system can provide lots of shelves and cupboards so we wouldn’t need to place any other storage furniture in the bathroom.

Another step when creating such a project will be specifying what finishing materials will be used for the floor and the walls. Most people still opt for ceramic tiles, but waterproof wallpaper or exotic wood works well, too. When planning the decor, we should also think of the lighting right away. A large bathroom with a window will provide plenty of natural light during the day. Nevertheless, the area around the mirror over the washbasin should be additionally illuminated. Besides, subtle and relaxing lighting will be useful in the relaxation area. Warm spotlights will allow for quicker regeneration.

Distribution of sanitary ware in a large bathroom

A large bathroom encourages us to experiment a little bit more. This also applies to the distribution of the respective pieces of sanitary ware. We can place a bathtub or a shower unit by the wall, and a washbasin can be placed against another wall. However, if the bathroom is very large, it could turn out that we are left with too much free space in the center. If the bathroom has more than 10 sqm, we can think of it as a wet room.

When it comes to a wet room, its design is approached differently than in case of a regular bathroom. In addition to the basic equipment and furniture, there may be room for a chaise longue or large plants. The result will be better if the bathroom has a window with a nice view. If it is a large loft bathroom, we could also use the potential that the window has.

When it comes to wet rooms the sanitary ware can be placed in the focal point. A beautiful free-standing bathtub would be a real highlight. It can be placed by itself in the center or we can separate it with a wall from a stylish shower unit. There will be no rigid division into areas here, but if we plan the equipment distribution well, the bathroom may seem even larger.

Large bathroom with a bathtub and a shower unit – there’s no room for dilemmas

Usually, among the household members we will find those who love long baths and those who prefer quick showers. In small bathrooms, there is no room for both, unless investors opt for a bathtub with a bath screen. Sometimes there is so little space that only a smaller shower unit fits. With a large bathroom, there are no such problems. Therefore, the best solution is a large bathroom with a shower unit and a bathtub. In the morning, when the household members are rushing to work, they can take a refreshing shower, and in the evening, when the body is tense, they can enjoy a long and relaxing bath.

Equipment for a large bathroom – what else can we add?

Questions about how to arrange a large bathroom are also related to what can be placed there  in addition to the standard equipment. We have already mentioned that for spaces that have over 10 sqm we might want to consider a wet room. A free-standing bathtub and a walk-in shower will be the perfect choice for this type of a bathroom. There is also space for two washbasins instead of one. We can also place a bidet next to the toilet bowl. And what else?
All depends on how much space is left and what are the household members’ expectations regarding the purpose of their bathroom. In addition to the already mentioned chaise longue, we can place there a dressing table, stylish end tables or shelves with candles and incense sticks. Some people opt for a steam room or an infrared sauna cabin.

What about colors and materials?

Regardless of what room we are arranging, we need to remember that the choice of colors has a huge impact on how we perceive the place. When it comes to large bathrooms, we do not have to worry about colors that could optically reduce the space. This means that we can opt for both light and darker shades. Besides, we have a lot of options when it comes to finishing materials. Smooth, patterned and textured tiles will work well, and matte and glossy models will look great, too.
Once the usable areas have been planned, we can think of the way to subtly separate them. Various finishing materials may help here. For example, in the relaxation zone, wood may be the dominating material, giving the interior a cozy feel. On the other hand, stone or ceramic tiles may be put around the bathing area.

The magic of accessories in a large bathroom

If it wasn’t for accessories, large and spacious interiors could seem cold and empty. It is the decorations that give the arrangement its unique character. It is recommended not to choose to many strong colors for the floor and walls, it’s the accessories that should have a clearer color accent. A vivid color will add energy and freshness to the bathroom. Colorful accents may be in the form of candles, vases, figurines, flower pots and towels, or a carpet in the relaxation area. So there’s plenty to choose from. Accessories have this advantage that in the future, when the household members wish to change the decor, they will not have to carry an extensive renovation. All they need to do is change the decorations; a different color or pattern will immediately make the bathroom look completely changed.

Lighting, the cherry on top in a large bathroom

As it was mentioned before, lighting is very important and, as in the case of plumbing, it is worth thinking about it at the stage of house construction or during a major renovation. Lighting is divided into several categories – general, additional and decorative. In bathrooms with windows, natural light enters the room, which increases the comfort of use and saves on bills. However, in the evenings or on cloudy days, general lighting, or ceiling lighting, is needed to use the bathroom. It is the primary source of light. In addition to this, individual areas should be illuminated. So additional light must be installed by the bathroom mirror, but it can also illuminate the bathing or relaxation area. Besides, if we have interesting decorations on the shelves, unusually arranged niches or other spots worth attention, we can give them extra gentle light by installing decorative lighting.
