How to arrange a bathroom referring to the 1980s style?

Bathroom referring to the 1980s styleLooking at interior trends, we can quite easily notice that for some time now designers have been eagerly returning to decorations from the communist era. Retro style enters more and more homes, and interiors of this type are warm and somewhat sentimental. How can we arrange a bathroom with such an aura then?

Since in the 1980s in various European countries stores were short of products, most homes looked alike then. There weren’t many possibilities to create unusual arrangements, and there are some features and decorative motifs that are inevitably associated with that period. Successively, the modern style entered our homes, with its characteristic minimalism, simple geometric furniture and little decoration. This kind of simplicity appealed to many people, but now, with retro design arriving into the interiors, we can also see a touch of Soviet style.

Communist style bathroom – important features

Nowadays, an investor planning a bathroom renovation has much more options than a few decades ago. Although the result he or she is trying to achieve is similar, it is much easier to plan finishing materials, patterns and decorations. Now the communist style bathroom is carefully thought out and there is no room for coincidence.

One of the features of this style are such colors as pink, blue and green. Many communist style interiors are bright, or even white. White is the perfect background for colorful furniture and grandma’s accessories.

A particularly good result can be achieved if the entire interior has one color. Monochromatic bathrooms were common years ago, so it is worth considering this solution also now. Square tiles are very important here. Smaller modern tile models arranged in a timeless check pattern will look good. An amazing effect can be obtained if we reach for tiles that are associated with old stoves. If the investor is aiming at a faithful reproduction of the communist style bathroom, wooden paneling can be included in the decor.

Lighting for the bathroom in the ’80s style

Lighting plays an important role in every room. Soviet style interiors should be equipped with glass chandeliers and wall lamps with warm light. Decorative plafonds will look equally impressive. Their light can remind us of the light of candles, which were once used quite often. We should also remember that the source of light located at the mirror must allow us to shave precisely and apply makeup.

What sanitary ware to choose?

Sanitary ware is the most important thing in the bathroom, so once we have a vision of what to put on the walls and floors, we need to choose the right equipment. First of all, it will be a floor standing close-coupled toilet. If we want to follow a retro direction, we should resign from modern concealed  sets. A massive free-standing bathtub made of cast iron will look marvelous, emphasizing the character of the arrangement. For the same reason, it is also worth having a good look at the washbasin and its base.

Equally important are bathroom faucets. Manufacturers’ offers don’t lack models in sophisticated shapes and with traditional taps.

Furniture for communist style bathroom

When decorating an interior, we need to think about the furniture. It should not only fit into the decor, but also be durable and functional. When it comes to Soviet style bathrooms, old and wooden furniture are worth attention. Floating decorated shelves or cabinet under the sink will be just perfect. We can achieve interesting result if we place an old restored chest of drawers in the bathroom. This kind of furniture can be found in antique stores and pretty often also in the family attic. We can also try scratching new ordinary furniture to make it appear old.

What accessories for a communist style bathroom?

The ’80s style means plenty of trinkets. Although we don’t often think of bathroom as a place for decorations, in this case it is worth including them in the arrangement. They will make the interior feel warm and cozy. An ornate framed mirror, brushes, stylized soap dishes and towel hangers are mandatory elements in the bathroom, and if we choose the old world ones, we will get the dual benefit. Putting a figurine, an old jug or a pot with flowers is a good idea, and instead of modern and simple radiators, it’s better to opt for the old ribbed radiators made of cast iron.

Bathroom in the ’80s style – is it worth it?

There is no doubt that the communist style interior is significantly different from what modern trends dictate. It will be a great choice for those who like to play with style and interior design. Those who are looking for unconventional solutions will enjoy it. Usually found at flea markets and in antique stores, furniture and accessories from this period are all unique, making each interior special. The bathroom will have a pleasant and warm atmosphere, which facilitates relaxation.

Such interior makes an impression, but isn’t something that will appeal to everyone. The 1980s style won’t convince people who like light forms, minimalism and modern lines of furniture. To them, a bathroom in communist style may seem chaotic, overwhelming and too old-fashioned.
