Bathroom with or without a window - what to opt for?

If it is doable, a bathroom with a window will always be a better idea. Better access to light, optimal air circulation, and what goes with it - no problems with excess humidity - are encouraging. A bathroom without a window is darker and less cozzy, but not everyone can afford the comfort of an interior with a window. The building design might simply not allow it. The best situation is when the house is still being constructed, or if we have a possibility to arrange a bathroom in the basement or in the attic.

It will be difficult, however, if we are living in a block of flats or a tenement house where the original design did not include a window in the bathroom. Then we could resort to some species of plants that, on one hand, would create ambience, and on the other, will absorb moisture. Plants for a bathroom without a window need to be moved to another room from time to time to provide them with some light, but after a few hours they should be ready to return onto the shelf in the bathroom.

Plastic windows or wooden windows – what is the best choice for the bathroom?

When deciding on a bathroom window, we need to keep in mind that the bathroom is a specific room, which is more humid than others. For this reason, many people choose uPVC windows, which do not require special maintenance and are resistant to humidity. Does this mean that we have to give up on wooden windows? Not necessarily. We can opt for oak, pine or spruce wood windows, but we have to remember about regular maintenance. Since wood is a natural material, this type of windows is increasingly popular, even though they are more expensive than the uPVC windows.

Roof windows in an attic bathroom

Depending on how big the bathroom is, how it is arranged and what effect the investor wants to achieve, the window can be different. If we think it out well, a small bathroom with a window will look as interesting as one in a spacious villa. However, the window can’t be too big then. An interesting suggestion are round windows, which are very original compared to traditional rectangular windows. Corner windows are also interesting. Having a spacious house, it is worth considering a bathroom with a balcony window. If the bathroom is to be in the attic, a lot is dictated by the roof structure. Roof windows in the attic have the shape of a smaller or larger rectangle.

Bathtub or shower in the bathroom with a window

The household members’ expectations and the size of the bathroom dictate what bathroom equipment we choose. A bathtub allows for a long relaxing bath, and if it is equipped with a bathtub screen, it can also serve as a shower. On the other hand, a shower enclosure takes up less space, and it’s faster and more comfortable to shower there than in a bathtub. A trendy solution in recent years is a walk-in enclosure. A bathroom with a window and a shower is a better option with children or elderly people at home, who may have problems with lifting their legs and getting into the bathtub unassisted.

What to use to cover the bathroom window?

When arranging a bathroom, we should not forget that it should offer intimacy. Therefore, we should think what would allow us to cover the window and ward off possible stares. We can find many types of covers on the market. Which one of them would be the best for you largely depends on the style in which the bathroom will be decorated and what colors it has. The most common choices are shades, blinds, curtains and net curtains, although there are some people who opt for window film.

What to keep in mind when designing a bathroom with a window?

Planning the arrangement, we should remember that the bathroom has to be functional and aesthetic at the same time. Sanitary equipment must be located in such a way so as to guarantee comfort of use. A narrow bathroom with a window may be a challenge, as it will be harder to fit all the pieces of equipment in it. In such bathrooms, a shower unit should be installed, instead of a bathtub. In small bathrooms, we need to make use of the walls and, for examples, make shelves on them.

Regardless of whether we wish to have a shower unit or a bathtub in the bathroom, it shouldn’t be located directly next to the window. On one hand, it wouldn’t be comfortable for the user, and on the other, it would be easy to splash on the glass, so the cleaning would need to be more frequent. It would also be difficult to access the window when you need to open or wash it.

Although a bathroom with a window is quite bright, it is still recommended to ponder on the lighting. Our bathroom should have main lighting, additional lighting at the mirror as well as decorative lighting, which will illuminate the decorations.
