Bathroom with a bidet - how to design it?

December 2021, author: Michał Swoboda, customer advisor
BidetMost Polish bathrooms do not have bidets installed, which usually results from limited space. But, there are countries, such as Spain and Italy, where this solution can be found in most households. What is a bidet used for and how to include it in a bathroom arrangement?

The bidet is not a new invention, it was first used as early as the 17th century in France. Interestingly, at that time it was one of the pieces of bedroom equipment. Only over the years it got perceived as sanitary ware, which should be placed in the bathroom. What is a bidet used for today and how to arrange the space to make its use comfortable?

What is the bidet used for?

Compared to what the bidet was used for in the past, the use of this device has changed considerably. In the past, aristocrats who had a bidet in their bedroom used it to wash their mustache and beard. It is hard to imagine that a bidet would have such a purpose nowadays. Currently, it is used mainly for washing up just after using the toilet and to refresh oneself during the day if there’s no time for a shower. This convenient device is also appreciated by people with mobility problems or pregnant women.

A bidet can also come in handy if there are toddlers at home. The bidet for kids can have a special cover to make it serve as a low-mounted washbasin. With this, a toddler does not have to climb up to wash his or her hands. What is more, a bidet can also be used to quickly wash the baby's skin after a diaper change.

Design of a bathroom with a bidet – things to keep in mind

A bathroom with a bidet can be extremely stylish and at the same time functional, provided that we pay attention to several basic matters. First of all, it is important to place the bidet at the right height. Since a bidet is usually installed next to the toilet bowl, we should remember to place them keeping the right distance between them. For a comfortable use of the sanitary ware there must be a 30cm space between the bidet and the toilet bowl. If the bidet is placed next to other pieces of equipment, such as a shower unit or a washbasin, the distance between them should also be of at least 30cm. The amount of space in front of the bidet also affects the comfort of use; according to specialists it should be of at least 60cm. The bidet is normally installed at the same height as the toilet bowl. It is recommended to place it 40cm from the floor, and if the bathroom is to be used by a person with disability, the mounting height should oscillate between 45cm and 50cm.

The visual aspect should not be forgotten either. The toilet bowl and the bidet must form a certain stylistic whole. They must have the same style and shape. Looking through different sets, we quickly realize that most of them would look great in modern, modern glam and industrial interiors, but there are also models whose design perfectly suits retro-style bathrooms. Some bidets have a special coating that makes cleaning easier. If investors don't want to spend too much time on cleaning, such a solution is certainly worth attention.

Bidet not always the same

Bidets differ not only in size, color and style. They can also be installed in different ways. We can choose between a floor-standing and a wall-hung bidet. When should we choose them? Wall-mounted bidets are more popular. The floor is uncovered, which makes the bidet appear lighter. Besides, this variant makes the room optically larger, so it is perfect also for smaller bathrooms. It is installed in two ways. We can either screw it directly to the wall, or use an in-wall frame. The second option is recommended, as it is safer. The first option should only be considered in case of solid walls.

On the other hand, if the bathroom is spacious, a floor-standing bidet will be an interesting option. It is also suitable for retro and classic interiors. In this case the bidet is screwed to the wall or the floor with fastening screws.

Although it may be tempting to install a bidet, many bathrooms in Polish apartments are small in size. It is often difficult to place there such basic sanitary ware as a shower unit, so installing a bidet seems almost impossible. It’s true in a way, or at least if we think of a regular bidet. However, we can consider investing in a douche spray. It is a special hand held sprayer placed by the toilet bowl. We don't need a lot of space or an additional drain outlet to install it. All we need is a hot water supply and a sprayer. With this solution the toilet bowl has two functions – a toilet and a bidet – all we need to do to quickly refresh ourselves is to use the sprayer.
